Objective

Students will re-write passages in the style of various authors.

Students will analyze selections from Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Edgar Allen Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher and identify each author's voice.

Then, they'll try rewriting one of the selections using the other author's voice. What would Alice In Wonderland be like if Poe had written it?

Steps

  1. I introduce the concept of "voice" and then students work with a piece from Lewis Carroll.
  2. Now they analyze the voice in a piece from Edgar Allen Poe.
  3. Students re-write one author's language using the voice of the other author.
  4. Students work practice writing in a specific voice about a random topic.
