You are looking at a fountain of lava during a 2007 eruption of Kīlauea on the island of Hawaii. This fountain was about 32 feet tall and came out of a spatter cone. Spatter cones form around a vent as globs of lava are thrown into the air. The lava piles up and cools around the vent, forming a cone-shaped mini-volcano.
