Jabberwocky and Context Clues
Summary
Context clues lessons can be a disaster. Here, we expose students to a delightful classic packed with nonsense words (“Jabberwocky”) and ask them to decipher the meanings and parts of speech. Then, it’s only natural for students to write their own nonsense poems.
- First students will try to define nonsense words from stanzas three and four.
- Then they rank those words based on how certain they are of their meaning.
- Finally, students can try their hand at writing their own nonsense poetry (and test their context clues on other students).
This lesson also includes 3 student videos and 5 printable worksheets.
