Precipitation Tournament

Objective

Students will judge using criteria and determine which type of precipitation wins the tournament.

Some notes on the less well-known competitors:

  1. Rain
  2. Virga - rain that evaporates before it hits earth
  3. Hail - is frozen to start with
  4. Freezing Rain - snow that melts while falling and then freezes on surfaces
  5. Sleet (ice pellets) - rain that freezes on the way down
  6. Graupel (pronounced gropple) - snow balls instead of flakes, also called "soft hail"
  7. Snow
  8. Drizzle
