McMurdo Station is an American research station and the largest community in Antarctica. It can support up to 1,200 residents, although during winter far fewer people stay. There are actually dozens of research stations in Antarctica operated under the Antarctic Treaty System, an agreement between countries that keeps Antarctica peaceful and used only for science.
