Objective

To create a differentiated task, start with high expectations and scaffold down.

As a new teacher, I'd start with grade-level material and then try to extend up. But this is hard. It's like trying to extend Tic-Tac-Toe. It's much easier to aim high and then scaffold down. Start with chess, and add scaffolds to make it more approachable. This is what we do with tee-ball, piano, gymnastics, and so on. We scaffold the real thing down only as much as is necessary. We remove the tee as soon as a child is ready to hit a pitch. We can do the same for reading, writing, math, and so on. Aim high. Scaffold down.
