Objective

How many questions can we come up with about baby name trends?

There are so many possibilities here. Perhaps…

• Have students focus on a single state over time.
• Compare trends in the north vs. the south or in the east and west.
• Is there a state that starts trends? States that are the slowest to join trends?
• Try to find the origin of a trend. Was there a famous person who had the suddenly-popular name?
• Ask your class to come up with titles for trends or events (such as 1921 "Mary subdues Helen").
• You can find more detailed baby name data compiled by the Social Security office.
