Objective

Students will convert between many US units of volume.

The goal is to get students thinking about what makes sense. Practice estimating. Practice interpreting numbers. There are so many directions you could take this.

Inspired by a question asked in Accessible Mathematics.

Steps

  1. We have a bathtub filled with 640 of water. Which unit is most likely?
  2. What if we filled that bathtub using juice boxes? How many would it take?
  3. What if we filled an Olympic-sized pool using bathtubs?
  4. Finally, students pick their own item to fill a bathtub with.
