Objective
Ask students to go beyond "I don't like it" and form critical opinions based on a set of criteria. Students can produce written arguments or turn their opinion into oral presentations.
- Introduce the concept with topics students are familiar with: games, music, or movies.
- Ask them when different choices might be the "best choice." For example, Solitaire may not be the greatest card game, but it's perfect for solo play.
- Explain that they are developing "criteria," a key component to a critical argument.
- Students can now judge multiple choices based on a set of criteria.
- Eventually, move to evaluate grade-level content.
