Grouping Quadrilaterals In A Hierarchy

Objective

Students analyze the similarities and differences of several quadrilaterals.

This video focuses on the idea of flexibly grouping four-sided shapes rather than memorizing definitions and names. We begin by noting how living things can be grouped in many ways (a hawk and a falcon go together, but so could a hawk and a pine tree - if we loosen up our requirements).

Steps

1. Students note that living things, as well as quadrilaterals, can be grouped in a variety of different sized categories. They consider how one quadrilateral is similar to and different from two others.
2. Students learn several criteria for grouping quadrilaterals (right angles, parallel sides, and congruent sides), then revisit their worksheet to increase their level of precision.
3. Students develop a hierarchy using the criteria from the previous video.
